JVC ANNOUNCES 120Hz CLEAR MOTION DRIVE TECHNOLOGY (HIGH-SPEED LCD) FOR FULL HD LCD TVs

JVC is proud to introduce another breakthrough technology for televisions, the 120Hz Clear Motion Drive for full HD LCD TVs. The world’s first 120Hz LCD TV was launched in fall 2005 and it reduced blurring or ghosting of moving images on a conventional 60Hz LCDs for a more comfortable and natural viewing picture. And now, this innovative technology has evolved for use with full HD (1920 x 1080) LCD TVs in direct correlation to the amount of information 1080p/1080i sources have to offer. Utilizing a frame doubling driver and a motion interpolation technique, JVC’s 120Hz Clear Motion Drive technology realized picture quality that is superior to panels with a theoretical 0msec at 60Hz drive. The newly developed driver for the full HD LCD TV quadruples resolution compared to a conventional HD LCD TV (1366 x 768), improves motion detection precision fivefold and realizes 10-bit processing for richer color reproduction of 1 billion colors. As a result of these advantages, this new technology delivers 1080p/1080i images with far smoother and silkier movement. It also exhibits excellent motion response performance when displaying scrolling texts and provides superb intensity for bright scenes without loss in luminance and contrast.

Development background
Regulating panel response speed has been a key element for reducing blurring or ghosting of moving images that can appear on LCDs; however, JVC engineers began to recognize that it was more important to improve the panel’s hold time performance than just response speed itself.

120Hz Clear Motion Drive
JVC’s 120Hz Clear Motion Drive uses an original high-precision interpolation algorithm, which detects the movement in images, and increases the frame rate to 120Hz to create an interpolated image that is displayed as two frames — the original plus the newly interpolated frame — in the same time it takes a 60Hz set to display a single frame. Through this method, brighter moving images without flickering or blurring can be achieved. The high-speed 120Hz drive is an applied technology derived from D.I.S.T. technology perfected over the years.

MPRT (Motion Picture Response Time)
Today, as competition escalates in the development of techniques to improve native response speed of the panel, a method called MPRT that measures the rate of image blurring has begun to receive more attention. As is shown in the graph, the comparative performance between 60Hz and 120Hz drives is noteworthy: the 120Hz driven panel with a conventional panel with a native response speed of 8ms achieves a superior MPRT figure (10.5ms) than the 60Hz driven panel with a native response speed of theoretical 0ms panel (13.3ms). In other words, 120Hz driven panels have far less blurring.

120Hz Clear Motion Drive for Full HD
JVC’s 120Hz Clear Motion Drive for full HD detects from more than 8000 surrounding dots in a frame to create a pixel and calculate movement in the current frame to the next. This process is performed on 2.07 megapixels in a frame using a dedicated LSI with an original algorithm. In comparison, it is a fivefold improvement from the original drive that realizes interpolation for complex movement in all directions. Moving news tickers or sub-titles on the screen and even scenes with very rapid panning that include diagonal movement will be reproduced clearly without significant loss in overall brightness and detail. Additionally, 10-bit quantization process allows the use of 1 billion colors for rich, natural color reproduction.

Benefits achieved
While more and more high-definition sources are available on the market today that allow users to enjoy HD content, JVC’s 120Hz Clear Motion Drive for full HD LCDs will play an important role in ensuring high resolution and exquisite details with natural color reproduction and silky movement.
